The first stakeholder consultation on post-2015 monitoring of water and sanitation took place in Geneva, Switzerland on 29-30 January 2015. In the consultation, options for SDG 6 indicators and monitoring mechanisms were presented to and discussed by some 20 Member States.

The main message from the consultation was that the proposed monitoring mechanism was relevant to country needs and with considerable implementation potential, but that more capacity and resources, as well as political will, would be needed to ensure success post-2015 monitoring of water and sanitation.

It was noted that national monitoring mechanism could effectively support regional and global monitoring mechanism, but the different levels may need different approaches, with an emphasis on voluntary and country-relevant monitoring at national level. A flexible approach, allowing Member States to enter global monitoring at a level in line with their capacity and capabilities, was viewed favourably.
